Secular Pinky Swear

The AHA just launched the "Secular Pinky Swear," which is a concept that challenges the Religious Right's "Silver Ring Thing" and demonstrates that secular people, especially secular young people, can have strong values.

Unlike the "Silver Ring Thing," the Pinky Swear doesn't have kids making promises of abstinence, nor does it rely on divine authority. Rather, it has kids declaring their secular worldview and promising little more than to be true to themselves. Importantly, the Pinky Swearers also state that they will not revert back to traditional religion for insincere reasons or due to pressure from family and/or society. Check out the Pinky Swear at:

Importantly, there is a petition that can be signed in connection with the Pinky Swear, and the petition is not limited to young people. We are trying to get lots of names on it, as the likelihood of getting publicity goes up if the petition attracts numbers. Please take a look at it, sign it if you feel so inclined, and pass it along to friends. Harvard's humanist chaplain, Greg Epstein, has signed, as has this year's AHA humanist of the year, PZ Myers.
